The KidCare America, as well as Thrive Student Centers', Model day consist of a very structured intentional day with specific goals for students in each gender, age and grade specific group. Here is what a typical day at a KidCare America after-school center looks like. Snack Interact Each afternoon a healthy snack is provided for the children in their mentor group. This time is also viewed as a bonding time between the mentor and the students.
Homework Help Homework time is a time when the staff and volunteers help the children and youth complete their homework.
Growth Groups Bible Club, Practical Living, and Read-Aloud are rotated through the week. Each area is described below.
Bible Club-Bible Club takes place one day each week and is based on a theme that runs through the entire month.
Practical Living- Children are taught various life skills during Practical Living time. Topics covered are: money management, learning to keep their room clean, dental hygiene, eating out, cooking, and other topics related to living life.
Read-Aloud- Read-Aloud is a time when the children are read to by an adult. Stories are what make up our life and they can be used to inspire and teach.
Vocational Education- Each month someone from the community comes in and talks about their career, what they do, how they do it, and why they chose that particular career. This gives the children the opportunity to hear about various career choices available to them as they grow.
Recreation Each day the children and youth participate in non-sports related recreational activities.
Tutoring Tutoring takes place each day and is a time that focuses on academic areas of weakness. Tutoring usually concentrates on reading and math.
The Huddle Each day the center ends with gathering together for all the students, staff and volutneers at the center. The Huddle is a time provided for worship, prayer, and emotional support. This is a time when the entire after-school center gathers for an end of the day uplifting send off.
KidCare America Mall The children and youth earn KidCare America Dollars for various behaviors and tasks. Each month the center opens the KidCare America Mall in which they provide toys, books, clothes, and various age- appropriate items for the students to purchase with their KidCare America Dollars. This teaches the children and youth about managing money through the KidCare America Bank.
These are just a few of the programmatic parts of the typical after-school day.
